Glycerin or glycol
Glycerin (glycerine) or glycerol is known for numbar of years years. It was synthesized by Swedish chemist Carl Scheele in 1779. At first waste of soap making process it became an important product on its own. His priceless properties are plenty and counting. It is often used in various industries as well itself or its derivatives from chemical reaction.
Glycerin is produced by interaction between fat and lye – the basic reaction in soap making. One of the generally mentioned qualities of glycerine it is capability to soften and moisturize the skin and the hair. It is so fantastic that usually companies don’t agree to glycerin in cheap ordinary soap. They isolate it from the raw product to add in their high end products such as lotions, moisturiser and other fancy skin care products.
On the other side small brands that produce mostly the soap don’t take apart this product. That is the reason why hand made soap usually is nicer to the skin and has that strongly pronounced moistening and softening effect. This product is also good solvent so it dissolves other cosmetically essential elements – the quality hugely used by the industry.
But this almost domestic and cute glycerin has its dark side – when mixed with nitric acid it turns into nasty nitroglycerin the powerful explosive. It is so sensitive that even couldn’t be used on ots own neither in mining no in military – smallest distubance was enough to set it off (don’t try it at home).
It was famous Alfred Nobel who invented process of mixing nitroglycerin with clay. This concoction was more stable and was named “dynamite”. He made a lot of money on it which up to our days represents a core of Nobel Prize fund, (yes the Peace Prize too).
But don’t let that scietific piece of information turn you off, pure glycerine is absolutely safe and useful both in and out. Take advantage of it.
